Samsung Galaxy Nexus First Impressions

I got the chance to play around with the Galaxy Nexus for a few moments and I must say that sucker is fast. Really fast! I was zipping along through all the apps and opening and closing and swiping – it was all such a breeze. By now, you know all the specs already. The screen was pretty large and the fact that there are no buttons really made a difference in the screen size since Samsung was able to capitalize on the extra space. The glass was indeed curved, but you had to look for it. It wasn’t hugely noticeable. The device felt really solid, but I can’t stand that flimsy back cover that Samsung has been adding as of late, but it did cut the weight down. I didn’t mind it so much since the device itself was so sturdy.
I managed to snap a few pictures, and the there really was no shutter lag. You have to use it for yourself to really understand how blazingly fast taking a picture was. I tried panorama out, but I couldn’t really think of too many cases for when I might use it, but it was still cool to have, and I’ll take it.

All-in-all, Android 4.o is a good forward step. The upgrade definitely feels like a true upgrade and not just Honeycomb 3.5. Everything is re-done, but it still somehow doesn’t feel finished. I would definitely make the Galaxy Nexus my next device, but I’m really looking for the next iteration. Jelly Bean is it?

The Manliest Movie Ever Made…Part II

If you are a guy who enjoys “guy” movies and haven’t seen the Expendables than your definitely missing out on a special treat. No seriously, the movie is awesome. Its a 2 hour testosterone trip. They had a Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Sylvester Stallone, and a great cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger. There was fighting, breaking of bones, and blood. Need I say more? Now check the below:

You no doubt have some questions. I’ll answer them.

Yes – That is chuck Norris. Yes – that is the very same Jean-Claude Van Damme from delightful movie delicacies such as Blood Sport and Double Impact.

Holiday Gift Guide

Gaming:

PS3 Move Bundle – Under $300.00

Xbox360 kinect bundle –  $339.00

I had the XBox360 for quite some time, however, there were a few things I was missing from the repertoire. Namely, another system. Having procured both major systems ensures that I will have access to the top games for both platforms at my whim. I can also choose which online community I want to interact with. If the person your thinking of purchasing for has one system and loves it chances are they will enjoy another game system as well unless they are just rabid fan-boys of a particular platform. That said, getting a bundle will provide the most “bang” for your buck. You can get a game as well as the cool features that come along with the motion controllers for the PS3 or the XBox360. They also don’t have to go out and purchase those items later. You would do well to note that both platforms support apps like Netflix and music/movie downloads however Xbox Live costs about $60.00 per year while the Playstation Network is free.

Gadgets:

iPad2 – from 499.00

Kindle Fire: 199.99

Asus Transformer Prime:  from 499.00

You can read our brief write-up on these tablets here. The iPad 2 is the most prestigious of the bunch and comes with the most apps tailored for the tablet experience. However, if the iPad doesn’t quite satisfy the palet, you can choose from other tablets most of which run some derivative of Android’s operating system. The Kindle Fire has a completely tricked-out user interface and is centered around its Amazon store. You can purchase reading material  and store your purchases in the cloud. The Asus Transformer Prime will be the first Quad Core Tegra 3 device. It will also be upgraded to Google’s latest flavored OS called Ice-Cream Sandwhich.

Tools:

Ryobi 18 Volt Tool Combo Kit, 5-Piece- $119.00

You can find the deal here. It’s a great starter kit that has pretty much everything that the wannabe do-it-your-self guy in your life will need. It’s got 5 pieces including a saw, drill, and sander.

Grooming:

Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D – $199-299

Art of Shaving – $20.00+

I’ve actually got a SensoTouch 3D myself and I will definitely recommend this product. It’s also a little gentler than a razor in that it doesn’t irritate the skin as much if your skin is sensitive. They are also waterproof so you can rinse them or use them in the shower. If you want to get fancy, one of those bad-boys has a touch screen. If your looking for something a little more old-school you can find what your looking for at The Art of Shaving. They have creams and oils and razors of all sorts.

Ladies, hope this will give you some ideas on what to get that special guy in your life. Happy shopping!

“Guerilla Kindness” App From BoomBoom Revolution

Boom Boom Revolution is getting people into the spirit of committing random acts of kindness through their new app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. I think it’s a pretty nifty idea and a little kindness goes a long way. They are calling these acts of kindness “Everyday Boom Boom” or EBB for short.

The way it works is anytime you commit an EBB or are the recipient of a kind act you are to post the picture online using the app to the Boom Boom! stream. People can share their stories and keep the good Karma flowing. You can download the app in the apple app store or via iTunes. Nice idea, but is there still time to work on the name?

Batman:Arkham City…Best Batman Game Ever?

In one word…yes.

I think you will be hard-pressed to find a better Batman game, and dare I say, a better superhero game anywhere. I’m trying to think and I’m honestly drawing a blank. Superman, Spiderman, Wolverine…they all fail to come up to the lofty standards that the Rocksteady crew has put forth in this game. There are tons of walk-throughs and tidbits you can find around the web so I won’t waste too much time there. I’ll just break it down into pros and cons and let you do the math.

Likes:

  • Gadgets
  • Winning
  • Side Missions
  • Combat
  • Voice Acting
  • Catwoman

The gadgets are just as great this time around as they were for Arkham Asylum.  In fact, you start off with most of the gadgets in tact. You’ve got the cryptographic sequencer, explosive gel, the batclaw, smoke pellets, and of course batarang. You get more as the game progresses and most of the items are actually upgradeable.

All of those gadgets make for an awesome experience playing the Dark Knight. The gadgets with the fight system really make you feel great when beating up the baddies.

Completing side missions also offer perks by giving you access to better weapons. You can play straight through the game without them, but you have a better time with a couple of extra goodies.

The Voice acting is top notch and reminds me of the good ole Batman Cartoon days. This is because many of the voice actors from then are present in this game as well. Kevin Conroy is back as Batman and Mark Hamill is doing the Joker.

Lastly, Catwoman is hot.

Dislikes:

  • Detective Mode
  • Riddler Trophies

It was hard to find anything to complain about with this game since there were so many things that were spot on. However, I did get weary of Detective Mode. It was annoying having to use it as often as we did. This was mostly because I’m convinced it was tearing up my eye site. The colors are all crazy and its cool for the first hour or so, then gets really annoying the rest of the time. I just wish it didn’t change the color of the world. It would be great if Detective Mode just helped you find clues and highlighted weapons. Or it may have been better to toggle different Modes in Detective Mode so that you weren’t stuck with the weird colors all the time.

The Riddler Trophies, while fun, are annoying. Most of the city is painted with question marks. It can be a little overwhelming and quite frankly is the only thing that doesn’t feel right in this universe. I could see the Riddler hacking in from time to time or as more subplots, but really just hiding gems all around the city? I felt like the Rocksteady crew could have changed the direction a little bit there rather than just adding more trophies.

Overall:

Overall, this game is stunning. They completely nailed the sequel which is really hard to do with movies and, in my opinion, even harder to do with games. Batman is even cooler, the enemies are cooler, the stage is bigger, the fighting is better, and the story line is top notch. Other than the annoying Riddler Trophies and needing Detective Mode on all the time this game is definitely worth springing for if you like super hero games.

Stop Being Such a Girl

Guest Author James E. Perryman Jr.

I’m a Man. Raised by women, but still…ALL MAN. In my life I’ve had to teach myself how to become this man. And as I get older, I realized not many are taught to deal with their emotions. I’ve had to deal with many of mine alone, not because I had no one to turn to, but because I thought that was what a man had to do.
So when a female friend of mine said ‘You have women issues’, meaning, I have issues in relationships and friendships with women (not that I have monthly pains, or want to wear their skin) I agreed. It was true and I didn’t know why. Despite the fact that I’ve been around women all my life, I do not understand them, and I never will, but I love them. However, the thing that really has me perplexed is that numerous times over the past year I’ve been told that I was acting like a girl..by a girl.
Each time this was said to me, whether in jest or as advice to ‘man up’, my initial reaction was to take EXTREME Offense! I was raised by my four older sisters and my mom, so I have an aversion to appearing feminine in any way. (I’M A MAN!! You’re the stupid little Girl!!)But after the anger subsided, I saw what they meant. No matter what, we all expect men to be men. Good or Bad, men should be Strong, Brave, and Unaffected by anything less than a bullet or sharp weapon (and sometimes thats no excuse). So if we men fall short of this, we must be reminded, that we are infact acting like a girl.

-Men aren’t allowed to cry unless their mother dies, and that must only be a single tear quickly wiped away.
-Men must never seem like they are not in control of the situation. (If you ask for directions, it means you have failed your rugged ancestors and you no longer possess the navigation gene)
-Men must be able to fix whatever mechanical, financial, or technical problem that may arise.
-Men must be a rock, not letting their emotions get the best of them. (You don’t care if she returns your call, you’re busy fixing your carburetor, or killing some beast with your hands)
-Men satisfy their women in every way possible.(Whenever a woman leaves you for another man, it is a sign of your complete deficiency as either a provider, lover, or protector, and therefore you have NO BALLS)

Though absurd, these are the exaggerated truths of society. While my mom did a fine job with my sisters, I notice that its different for girls today. Most of the women I know have been raised to think for themselves and believe in their abilities. They are to provide for themselves and not depend on any man or woman (as I was told by my sister ‘women are competitive, sometimes for NO reason’).
So why would the most common form of advice that I get from women be to ‘stop being a girl’? Aren’t they girls?…not anymore… women don’t want to be girls! They are women, they are grown, and they want MEN who are their equal(an equal that realizes that the WOMAN sets the scale). While every aspect of the male persona may confuse, aggravate and irritate women, they realize that we as men are capable of greatness, when we are not distracted by petty or futile things. Petty things like cleavage and futile things like trying to win an arguement with a woman. We are not equipped to battle in the mind of a woman. As men we try to think logically and be problem solvers. Unfortunately we are also problem causers, in that we dont always take into account the ‘unseen’. Women are experts in the UNSEEN.

-A woman knows when another woman has given her ‘a look’…and what that look meant.
-A woman knows when you are lying, whether she chooses to believe you or not she knows.
-A woman knows that you haven’t noticed all the 1,000,000 things she has done just so you, as a man, can be comfortable, encouraged, and not immasculated.
-A woman thinks of 10 possible outcomes to a situation, all before that situation has even occurred..and worries about them all accordingly.
-A woman will be friends with a woman she doesn’t even like, just to keep an eye on her.
Now…thats alot of stuff to have on your mind, and its not even the half of it.

Women have the amazing ability to tell a man, he is acting irrational like them, and not discredit themselves in the process. When I went through a break up with my girlfriend I spent alot of time talking to my mom, the most amazing woman on earth. (Yes i’m a reformed mama’s boy). And her counsel to me changed my life. She told me that I have been dominated by women all my life and it was time for me to make decisions for myself. Be lead by God to become the Man that I was meant to be. I couldn’t torture myself trying to be the perfect man for my ex, (whom had already moved on). I had to focus on the path before me. I couldn’t sit around talking to every soul about her, regretting everything I’d done, wondering what she was doing, thinking, and feeling. I had to concern myself with things I could control.
From watching my sistes grow up, I can imagine being a girl is torturous.Through dealing with society’s demands and guidelines for their lives and bodies,it must be exhausting. They must protect their heart, soul, and Goodie parts from attackers, every moment of the day. I’ve seen girls spend their day questioning everything from their own motivations and decisions, to whom they can trust with their feelings and sometimes their lives. As a man, I can’t identify with that 100%, but I do admire every woman I know who has endured her plight in life and still has the strength to admit she is going through the baggage she carries with her.
So the advice to ‘stop acting like a girl’, while still an insult, is now more of a wake up call to me, as a very sensitive guy (I’m also a cancer) to stop living inside my head and take responsibility for whatever I’ve done and control of what I have control over…which usually feels like just the remote, but hey its a start. At least I know that I have a long way to go, and I’m appreciative of all the women in my life who have helped me( either by advising me or breaking my heart) develop into the man I am to be. Now if ONLY they could take their own advice!

3 Tablets to Look out For This Holiday Season

Kindle Fire:

The Kindle is Amazon’s newest 7″ device. It’s quite different from the E-Readers because of the fact that the display is full color. It will also have access to many apps downloadable from the Amazon Marketplace. Compared to other tablets, internal storage is fairly mediocre, coming in at around 8 Gigs, however, with access to Amazon’s cloud storage and the ability to re-download any app you ever downloaded, you may not need it. You connect to the internet via wi-fi as there is no 3g or 4g options at this point. Units are now shipping for $199 bucks!

Asus Transformer Prime:

This bad boy will be pretty powerful using NVIDIA’s Quadcore Tegra chip which means it should be able to handle pretty much anything. Gaming should be pretty fast and fluid with that much power under the hood. What makes the Asus Tablet different is that it can be docked with a keyboard which carries extra battery power and usb ports. This can come in handy for power users. Asus just announced the product so expect it to go on sale before the Holidays.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1/8.9:

Samsung has different sizes to suite different needs. The smaller 8.9″ for a super mobile experience or the 10.1″ for a nicer viewing experience. Both are running Android’s Honeycomb and have wi-fi versions, but only the 10.1″ models offer  4G options with either Verizon or T-Mobile. You can take a look at Samsung’s different tablet offerings here.

I’ll be posting updates right here on this page for those interested. Below is the link to the official site with more information.

Movember Info

For a style guide you can go here if you want a particular look, or if your interested in looking up the rules just click here.

For those who don’t know what Movember is all about, its basically a charity event meant to increase awareness about men’s health issues like prostate cancer. You can find more information on what its about here.

Three Shooters You Must Play!

Resistance 3:

Got a chance to Demo this game and I must say that this game is not only beautiful but fun to play. You all know the story, hoards of baddies have come to annihilate man-kind and only you the player can stop them. Insomniac Games takes it back to the arcade with life packs rather than automatic health regeneration which is very noticeable. The weapons are crazy! The Chimera definitely don’t sit there and get shot, the AI is pretty good. Definitely a game you should be checking out if you like shooters.

Gears of War:
Gears of War is a great shooter because it somehow gets you so involved in it’s story and it’s characters. The visceral nature of the combat  system is just over the top, which is just the way most of us like it. Online play is great so you really can’t go wrong here.

Call of Duty 3:

Black Ops was great, but I am really looking for another modern combat story rather than soemething that takes place in the past. MW3 comes out Nov 8th, and please believe I’ll be on it…
