The official trailer for the new Roxy spin-off is here and honestly, it’s not too bad. Actually, it’s pretty good and had me exclaiming and shadow boxing in the mirror at several different moments.
The movie stars Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan. Jordan plays Apollo Creeds son, and it looks like the boy gets advice from his Dad’s Nemesis – Rocky Balboa. He also looks like he’s working through abandonment issues as he’s obviously had to grow up without his father since Ivan Drago killed him in Rocky IV, arguably the best Rocky film in the franchise.
The movie is directed by Ryan Coogler, the director behind Fruitvale Station – the story about the Oscar Grant shooting in 2009. Interestingly, the main character in both films is played by Jordan.
I have my fingers crossed, but looking at this video, it looks like the movie might just be worth watching. I’m also glad Sylvester isn’t getting back in the ring on this one, though I will still pay money to see him as Rambo one more time.
Skyfall, the new Bond flick comes out November 9th and I’m quite sure many of you will go and check it out. Maybe not so much for what you don’t know about James Bond, but perhaps for what you do know about the character. Love him or hate him, Bond has always been a very polarizing figure to movie-goers. My take on that is because he never really departs from the characteristics that make him James Bod. The womanizing, the drinking, the wanton disregard for his life and others’. That is until Skyfall.
I consider Skyfall the completion of the reinvention of Jams Bond for this century. All of the previous Bond’s have followed a very rigid script. You’ve got your women in distress, your super cool spy gadgets, your lavish parties, and of course your over-the-top villain. Every man’s so-called dream for the most part. You could see the shift in styles with Casino Royal with a more rugged and slightly more realistic, at least combat-wise, spy thriller. Skyfall is the completion of that shift. Below I’ll talk about the stuff that worked, the stuff that didn’t and a quick summary.
What Worked
Combat
I think that Bond’s fighting skills have evolved over the years and Daniel Craig’s Bond is a much more physical one. He’s definitely got the body for it and he makes the physically daring shots of the movie more believable. Also, he’s not invincible. He get’s hit often, but is relentless which is something I enjoy watching. There’s a particular scene where Bond literal digs pieces of bullet from his chest with a knife. Granted, I didn’t really believe someone in real life would do that, but if this Bond where real, he totally would.
Technology
Or I should say lack thereof! One of the themes I think the director is re-thinking. I suppose to make Bond more believable they had to get rid of the outlandishness of the gadgets. And so they have. I was brought here kicking and screaming, but I must admit that it works. I think they even poked fun at the lack of gadgetry at one point with Q remarking that he wasn’t in the business of making exploding pens! At that – I was heart broken, but it really made sense. Daniel Craig is outwitting his opponents in the fine art of fisticuffs – not chess, so anything more would be inauthentic to this imagining of James Bond.
The Villain, played by Javier Bardem does make excellent use of technology, but much more in a cyber genius sort of way. However, if you actually know a thing or two about coding then please look-away or be prepared to roll the eyes. There is lots of hacking and cyber espionage that might tickle the fancy of more modern audiences.
Villain
Javier Bardem does a fantastic job as the villain, and completely steels the show once he’s on screen. Perhaps that’s why he doesn’t make an appearance until well into the movie. He’s frightening, unpredictable, and really quite lovable – until you realize he’s completely crazy. He totally hits a home-run here, and he is quite easily in my top five Bond Villains. Besides Jaws and Boris.
What Didn’t Work
Bond Girls
I think for the most part everything worked except for the Bond Girls. Now here’s why. They couldn’t make up their minds on how to portray women in this movie. In previous Bond’s – they were very shovanistic and completely stereotypical. It works because they were that way with every character in the movie. The Bond girls don’t work anymore in Skyfall because on one hand you have a very strong and self-reliant female lead in Naomi Harris, while you have a more traditional female lead in Berenice Marlohe. And Bond does the nasty with both. And also a native on some Island who shall remain nameless. So on one hand it looks like they are going progressive, but Bond is still disrepectin’ the honeys which leaves me scratching my head. Which path shall we take? Giving women some respect in these movies finally or just letting them be eye-candy. Either path is cool, because it’s all in the fictional world, but you’ve got to know which path your going down, and choose it openly. There were definitely conflicting tones when it came to the women in the movie which could have been avoided.
Summary
All in all, I found it to be quite enjoyable to watch. There is quite a bit of “changing of the guard” so-to-speak so be ready for that, but I think it’s all for the best. It’s what must be done to keep Bond fresh. I think Mr. Craig has about 2, maybe 3 more runs at Bond, and it will be on to the next one. However, until then, enjoy the latest installment Skyfall as we see a more intimate look at James Bond.
My main man Tony Starks is back in the house. There is a new sneak peak of a trailer online that you can see below. It’s only 17 seconds but there are a few interesting tidbits. There is a part where Tony seems to be fighting more robots, but I suspect they are his own suits that he will be fighting. There’s a guy with a gun and a crumby haircut which we assume to be the bad guy, but I think he won’t be too important. He’s probably the right-hand man of the real bad guy. But these are just my guesses. Have a look and come to your own conclusions.
Though the story line seems pretty similar to what I consider to be the best action movie of this year hands down – The Raid:Redemption, I am still looking forward to watching the Dredd 3D reboot when it comes out on the 21st. I’ve been following it for a while now, and I just love the story line and character.
Our main character, Dredd, is evaluating the rookie – played by Olivia Thirlby, when of course, something happens during training where they have to venture into the hood of hoods and handle business. Check the new TV Spot below:
I just got word about a new Comic that Lionsgate is putting out that will be a prequel to the upcoming movie starring Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, and Lena Headey. The comic will be 3D – which seems a bit gimmicky, but still intriguing enough to check out. As most of you already know, Dredd is originally a comic series written by John Wagner & Carlos Ezquerra.
Above is the cover art for the new comic which looks great! The cover is penciled by Greg Staples. What’s really interesting is that Judge Dredd is a hero from a British publication that is supposed to sum up justice itself. That’s why throughout the years, his appearance in the comics rarely changes and you never see his face. It looks like this new movie will follow that methodology as I don’t recall seeing his face in any of the trailers.
So any half-hearted fan of the Wutang Clan knows how the group successfully blended the Kung-Fu movie genre with their beats and rhymes. It actually led to my College thesis which was asian culture in hip-hop, however, I digress. The truly important bit of information in this post is the fact that one of the leading members of the Clan, a mr.”Rza”, if you may, has successfully teamed up with another fellow by the name of – Quentin Tarantino, to make a Hong-Kong Styled Martial Arts Movie. The title, aptly named, is “The Man with the Iron Fists.” No doubt, you have ignored this whole post and are watching the trailer right now so I’ll shut up. Cast includes the likes of Russel Crowe,Lucy Liu, Pam Grier, Dave Bautista, and Daniel Wu to name a few. Check this, music on the movie will be made by Black Keys, Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa, Wu-Tang Clan, and the Rza himself. I wish they had Yuen Wu Ping as fight choreographer – but looking at the trailer, I think I’ll be alright.
Stop what your doing right now…no, RIGHT NOW! If you’re like me and are looking forward in the Judge Dredd reboot that’s coming out soon then feast your eyes on the below.
Just looking at the style of the movie – it looks to be just as gritty as the original that starred Sylvester Stallone. Thought that movie got a bad rap. It was pretty good for what it was and I watch every now and again when I get nostalgic. Looks like the helmet stays on like the comics though which I think is a good move. It’s really about the symbolism of the Judgeship. Can’t wait to get to check this movie when it comes out. I will say though, that the premise sounds a lot like an Indonesian martial arts flick that came out a few months ago by the name of “The Raid: Redemption”. I’m digressing, but that movie is off the chain if you haven’t seen it yet. You can find the trailer for it here.
If you are a guy who enjoys “guy” movies and haven’t seen the Expendables than your definitely missing out on a special treat. No seriously, the movie is awesome. Its a 2 hour testosterone trip. They had a Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Sylvester Stallone, and a great cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger. There was fighting, breaking of bones, and blood. Need I say more? Now check the below:
You no doubt have some questions. I’ll answer them.
Yes – That is chuck Norris. Yes – that is the very same Jean-Claude Van Damme from delightful movie delicacies such as Blood Sport and Double Impact.
Every once in a while, a movie dares its producer to be made. Good plot? No, great story with subtle inuendos and nimble intellectual antics – Nay. Brute force, guns, knives, explosives, testosterone…with all the breath of my lungs, a resounding YES!
I personally can’t wait to see this movie. For starters, Arnold Schwarzenegger will be in it! Also Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, and Jason Stathom just to name a few. And that’s not even everybody!
The plot, if your interested, is around a group of highly skilled mercenaries who are sent on a mission to take on some dictator. Like it matters. You know you will be seeing this movie. Check the trailer below:
Now if your old Skool like me, you remember the first predator movie with Arnie and Company. Over the top muscles, guns, and action. I love that movie. Now, if you were waiting for a sequel, not the AVP movies, but a pure Predator Movie, then wait no longer. Robert Rodriguez is at the helm and his cast includes the likes of Laurence Fishburne and Adrien Brody. I’ll stop talking now:
